We All Need A Miracle Sometimes

No matter how long you have walked with the Lord, whether it’s only been 6 months or over 30 years, we all come to a point, a challenge, a need that is just too big. We find ourselves taking stock of our resources, time, and energy and find them lacking. We just can’t make it through this on our own.

Our flesh wants to despair and give in to the lies of the enemy, who tells us that we’re on our own, we’re going to fail. The fear and hopelessness threatens to swallow us whole and we begin to cry out to God and beg Him to step in.

If you’re in that place right now, if you’re asking God for a miracle, you can have hope today. God is listening and is ready to fight on behalf of His beloved child.

God promised to meet our needs in Philippians 4:19,

|

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

“According to His riches…” God has infinite riches, right? Which means He has infinite resources and solutions to our problems, no matter how insurmountable. He is well and able to meet any need, exactly how it needs to be met. He can give you your miracle.

God Wants to Take Care of You

When we hear bad news and it seems like there is no solution, we can be tempted to doubt God’s goodness. How can He claim to love us and allow this horrible thing to happen in our lives? You might be surprised to hear this, but even the disciples struggled with this at times! Check out Mark 4:36-40:

|

After dismissing the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. And a fierce gale of wind developed, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling with water. And yet Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They actually asked Jesus, God in the flesh, if He cared about them. They didn’t think to stop and wonder how He could sleep through such a racket. Jesus didn’t freak out about the storm because He was resting in God’s peace! He knew His Heavenly Father would protect Him and get Him safely to shore.

When the storm comes in your life and threatens to capsize your boat, remember how much Jesus trusted in God. You can rest amidst the waves knowing your Heavenly Father has your back.

Most Miracles Aren’t Instantaneous

When we have a need, we want an instant solution. We want God to raise His hand and a pile of money to appear for those overdue bills, or the doctor to call you back and say that your test results actually came back negative and you have a clean bill of health. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten, it doesn’t work that way.

However, just because your miracle doesn’t immediately appear, doesn’t mean God is not working on your behalf. Psalm 27:13-14 says,

|

I certainly believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.

We will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. However, God’s timeline is different than our timeline. He is juggling so many other details and situations beyond ours, and He is arranging them so they perfectly fit together for our benefit. You may be tired of us mentioning Romans 8:28 at God’s Best For Your Life, but let’s read it again anyway:

|

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

We can trust that God will work out our circumstances for our good – we just need to trust His process. Now, I realize this gets difficult, especially when you have needed a miracle for months, even years, and it seems like God has forgotten about you. While I can most assuredly say He has definitely not forgotten about you, there are things you can do during the waiting.

We Are Not A Bystander In Our Miracle

Having an impossible need can make us feel helpless. However, we are anything but. God wants us to participate with Him as He orchestrates our miracle. We are His partner as He works and He has a job for us to do.

If you read about the miracles Jesus performed during His earthly ministry, you may start to notice a pattern. Let’s look at a few examples.

The Loaves and Fishes

Take a look at John 6:8-13.

|

One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many people?” Jesus said, “Have the people recline to eat.” Now there was plenty of grass in the place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Jesus then took the loaves, and after giving thanks He distributed them to those who were reclining; likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing will be lost.” So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with pieces from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.

Jesus accepted the seemingly small gift of five loaves and two fishes from a little boy and multiplied it to feed five thousand people. They even had leftovers! Because of that little boy’s faith in Jesus, all of their needs were met.

The Centurion and His Servant

Next, let’s read Luke 7:2, 6-10.

|

Now a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die… Now Jesus started on His way with them; but already, when He was not yet far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to enter under my roof; for that reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You; but just say the word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under myself; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

The centurion was a Roman soldier, not a Jew, and thus believed himself to be unworthy of being in the mere presence of Jesus. Nevertheless, he begged for Jesus’s help, having faith that He could heal his servant even though they were not of the same nationality. Jesus was so impressed by the centurion’s faith that He healed the ailing servant then and there.

The Paralyzed Man

Let’s read a couple chapters earlier, in Luke 5:17-20, 24-25.

|

One day He was teaching, and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. And seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” … But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.” And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

What amazing friends this man had! They were so convinced of Jesus’s power that they were willing to tear through a house to get to Him. Their incredible faith opened the way for their friend to receive the healing he needed and walk away rejoicing.

The Bleeding Woman

This is the final miracle performed by Jesus we’re going to look at and it’s in, you guessed it, Luke. Turn to Luke 8:43-48.

|

And a woman who had suffered a chronic flow of blood for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.” But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had left Me.” Now when the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and admitted in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

In other translations, it mentions that this woman had been to countless doctors and none of them could solve her problem. How hopeless she must have felt before hearing about Jesus! She likely faced much rejection and shame in connection to her condition as well, but she faced her fear and pushed through the crowd just to touch His cloak, so firmly she believed in His healing power. Her faith enabled her healing!

Faith: Fuel For Your Miracle

You may have noticed the pattern. Each of these miracles came about because someone stepped out in faith. They didn’t wait for Jesus to come to them, to ask them what their need was. They pursued Him, standing firm in the belief that not only was He able to give them their miracle, but that He was willing.

So what does that look like for us? Obviously, since Jesus is no longer here in a physical body, we can’t go find Him and ask Him to help us, right? Well, not exactly.

We do have access to Jesus every single day – in our prayer life. What’s more, His amazing, miraculous power is still present and available to us. We just need to have enough faith to bring our need to Him and believe that He is going to come through for us. Philippians 4:6-7 says,

|

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

I want to emphasize “in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving“. So we see that asking God for a miracle has two steps: asking Him to work on our behalf, and then thanking Him for it.

The Power of Gratitude

When we thank God for His faithfulness and provision in our situation, even before we see any kind of change, movement, or breakthrough, it solidifies and powers up our faith. We have already received our victory in the supernatural, even if it has not yet come to fruition in the natural. We no longer need to feel hopeless, because our hope is in Him.

Practically, it looks like this:

“Lord, I need a miracle. Please act on my behalf and meet my need. I know that You love me and You already have a plan to give me exactly what I need, exactly when I need it. So I am leaving my situation in Your hands. Thank You for Your faithfulness. Thank You for Your favor. Thank You for my miracle.”

It’s that easy. Then, you have to walk it out. Every time you think about your need, thank God that He will meet it. Thank Him for the victory and the blessings you will see because of it. Every time the enemy wants to sow seeds of fear in your heart, combat it with scripture about God’s power and provision.

Let every word about your situation that comes out of your mouth be faith-filled. Don’t speak words of doubt like, “I just don’t know what I’m going to do.” Say instead, “God is faithful and He is working on my behalf. God will meet all of my needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus.” Say it as often as you need to!

Be Mindful of Your Expectations

There is one more thing you should do when you are waiting on a miracle. Release your expectations. In other words, don’t put God in a box. This means you have to be okay with God meeting your need in a way that you don’t expect. It might be through a source you didn’t choose, or it might take much longer than you would have wanted. No matter how He decides to give you your miracle, you have to let Him do it His way.

Now, I realize that this can be very challenging and even scary. However, this is a part of faith. Let’s look at Isaiah 55:8-9:

|

For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

God sees so much more than we do. He not only considers our present needs, but our future ones too. Not only that, but He seeks to grow us personally and spiritually through all seasons, especially the challenging ones. If your miracle hasn’t happened yet, it’s for a good reason. If He met your need, but not in the way you would have liked Him to, it’s for a good reason. We have to trust that His plan is always, always the best things for us and lay our will down at His feet.

Get Ready for Your Miracle

Receiving a miracle is ultimately about trust. Do you trust that God is powerful enough to meet your needs? Do you trust that He loves you enough to give you exactly what you need, when you need it? If the answer is yes to those questions, then all you need to do is thank God and wait for your miracle, because it’s coming. And it will be exactly what you need.
