East and West (Forgiveness: Part 2)

east and west

How does God forgive us again?

As a scientist and a homeschooling mom, I have often given small group classes on scientific principles to our local co-op.  I was preparing to do one on magnets and magnetism and I stumbled on a spiritual truth that I think will really bless you.

In my last blog, I mentioned Psalm 103:12 which states,

|

As far as the east is from the west,

So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

I previously shared some personal wisdom about how to apply that and you can read it here.

East and West

But as I was setting up some experiments with a compass and preparing to teach kids about how to read it and make one of their own, God showed me something profound.  He asked me, “Why did the writer of Psalm 103 use east and west instead of north and south?”  Honestly, I had never really thought about it.  I always assumed they were pretty much the same.  North to South and East to West are the same distance on a map of the world, aren’t they?

After thinking about a bit, He showed me that if someone were to travel north, to the North Pole, they would eventually find where north and south meet.  Even though they would be traveling the same direction, they would at some point be going south.  The actual distance between the North and South Poles is measurable—8,595.35 miles.  But if you start out on the equator and travel east, you could travel around the entire globe and still never meet west.  The distance from the North Pole and the South Pole is a really long way, but the distance from east to west is infinite!

In Psalm 103:12 God could have said, “As far as the north is from the south” and that would still have been a really long way, but His removal of our sins through Christ is infinite!

The writers of Psalms probably didn’t have a working knowledge of magnetism and the magnetic field surrounding earth that results in North and South Poles, but God did.  And in His infinite wisdom, He placed this eternal truth in a format that even homeschooling, scientific moms in middle Missouri could wonder at!
