How clean is your water?

Are you drinking from the toilet?

“For My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me,
The fountain of living waters,
To hew for themselves cisterns,
Broken cisterns
That can hold no water.”
Jeremiah 2:13

Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”  John 4:13-14

Everyone wants to be loved, to feel accepted, to know approval, to have favor.  There is a thirst in every human heart to know that we matter and that we are loved and accepted in spite of our faults.

How do you satisfy that thirst?

God designed us with this desire on purpose.  His plan is for us to come to Him and Him alone for the fulfillment of that desire, but so many times we go to others to meet that need.  We look to our spouse to tell us we are still okay after we make a mistake.  We look to our parents tor approval when we feel unsure about a decision.  We look to our jobs to provide us with the confidence that we are important in this world and are worthy of the space in which we occupy.  We may even look to our kids for that unconditional love we desperately thirst for.  These desires are not wrong, but trying to fill them with other people or work or knowledge, or anything other than with relationship with God Himself, will always leave us thirsty.

God offers the cleanest, purest water

It’s kind of like the flow of water in our homes.  God is the source of fresh living water in our hearts.  When we draw from the “faucet” of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit in our hearts and lives, we will always receive fresh, life-giving water that will wash away our evil thoughts and the worldly contamination we come across during the day.  Fresh water will flow from us to others and they will be refreshed as well, as we take the time to refresh ourselves in Him daily.  This means drawing our need to be loved from seeing how much God loved us in sending His only Son to die for us.  Walking in His divine acceptance of us through the sacrifice of Jesus to cover and remove all of our sins.  Knowing His approval of us simply because we are in Jesus, and not for anything we have earned or done.  That unconditional love will set us securely in His peace.

The world’s water is filthy and polluted

When we choose to draw from the world, however, the flow of water starts going the wrong way, and we end up with sewage in our lives.  We wait to feel good about ourselves when others tell us we are pretty, lovable, accepted.  We strive for a certain car, a specific kind of spouse, a certain level of income to believe we are worthwhile individuals or worth the love that we crave.  This dirty, polluted water won’t help us grow and mature in the Lord, but will make us sick.  When we seek these things, we are drawing from the broken cisterns, the toilets, in our lives and walking right past the clean, fresh, purifying water found in Christ alone.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  Matt 6:33

Make the decision right now to draw only from Him and His Word.  Decide to let go of the broken pipes you have been using to find fulfillment and let His Word define you and love you completely.  He really does want to supply all of your needs.  He really does love you.  And He will, if you let Him.
